Chamber’s Civil War seminars raise funds for battlefield preservation

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Chambersburg Civil War Seminars donated nearly $8,000 for battlefield preservation during its July seminar. The money was raised through the sale of Civil War books and other history memorabilia.

The seminars, sponsored by the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, have raised more than $110,000 for battlefield preservation since their inception in 1989.
John Howard, superintendent of Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Md., accepted a $4,000 check from David G. Sciamanna, president of the Chamber, on behalf of the battlefield.
“There is only one Antietam, there is only one Gettysburg, and there is only one Shiloh….,” Howard said. These sites were preserved “through the hard work of many people over many generations. The land we were able to protect for you is now available to you,” he said.
Howard thanked the Chamber and the community of Chambersburg. “There’s so much history here and so much to enjoy. Thank you for the wonderful work you’re doing and your devotion.”

Liz Jacoby accepted a check for $1,200 on behalf of the Civil War Preservation Trust. She pointed to the saving of 25,000 acres from development and said much more land will be “saved or paved in the next 10 or 15 years. Donations like this go a very long way.”

Other organizations receiving contributions were Save Historic Antietam Foundation, $800; Western Maryland Interpretive Association, $800; National Museum of Civil War Medicine, $500; and Woodlake Battlefield, $500.
